To Walkie or not to Walkie?

“If you have an important point to make, don’t try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver. Hit the point once. Then come back and hit it again. Then hit it a third time – a tremendous whack.” ~ Winston Churchill

Me: So I think we should get walkie-talkies.
Tempo: Why?
Me: So we can communicate.
Tempo: Can't we just talk?
Me: Not when I'm inside the rig and you're outside!
Tempo: Good point. Okay, I guess. But I'll look like a dork...

WalkieMany, many things can go wrong when backing up an RV, setting up camp or breaking down camp (emptying your tanks). Not the least of which you can run over your spouse (or your dog). Sure we have back up cameras and mirrors, but, glare, low light and camera distortion sometimes make it almost impossible to see well.

Enter the walkie-talkie. Tempo says she feels like a81kpvAJ2XzL__SL1500_ “dork” using the walkie outside while I’m inside backing up the rig. But, using walkies has kept us from hitting more than one obstacle (including taking out our A/C unit with a low hanging tree branch). I’ve also witnessed more than one couple screaming at each other as one tries to guide the other into a camp site …“Noooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!! Morrrrrrrre toooooo theeeee leeeeeeeeeefffffft!” While comical, it is also annoying to your neighbors.

We decided to go with the Motorola MS350R 35-Mile Talkabout Waterproof 2-Way Radio (Click here to view on Amazon). At just under $70 bucks for a pair, recharging stations included, we found the value to outweigh the cost. The range is adequate for our intended use, they are rechargeable and so far have survived three heavy-rain set ups with out a failure. If you would like to assess or purchase this product click on this link (you get the same low Amazon price and we receive a small commission if you purchase using the link):

As an added bonus we took on call signs for walkie use. Mine is, of course, “IronMan”. Tempo chose her call sign because she admires Laura Bush (“Tempo” is Mrs. Bush’s Secret Service code name). And AussieOne…well he’s an Aussie! So be dorks like us and save your rig!

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.” ~ George Bernard Shaw

Hi, I'm Gonzo (call sign "Ironman"). I like to think of myself as an ordinary guy making the "next thing" happen now. I live and work in Texas with my wife, call sign "Tempo" and our fur babies AussieOne, Red and Griz (call signs of course). Together we make up a merry band of travelers wandering in search of extraordinary experiences, good wine and the occasional craft beer. Thank you for your interest in our blog! Cheers!
